New Wadi Al Qarha reserve in Sharjah set under strict conservation decree
Strict bans imposed on hunting, construction, and disruptive human activities
SHARJAH – His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has issued a royal decree establishing the Wadi Al Qarha Nature Reserve in the Emirate of Sharjah.
The reserve has been officially designated as a protected natural area with its geographical boundaries defined according to an approved map. The decision formalises long-term environmental protection measures aimed at preserving biodiversity, wildlife habitats and natural formations within the designated zone.
The decree also reinforces alignment with Federal Law No. (24) of 1999 on the Protection and Development of the Environment and its amendments.
Protected status
Wadi Al Qarha Nature Reserve is now legally recognised as a conservation zone where ecological integrity is prioritised. The decree prohibits all activities that may harm wildlife, marine life or natural ecosystems, including those affecting the area’s aesthetic and geological value.
All living organisms within the reserve, along with birds and migratory species using the area for breeding or rest, are granted protection under the law. The reserve is intended to function as a preserved ecological system with minimal human disturbance.
Prohibited activities
A wide range of activities has been explicitly restricted to safeguard the environment. Hunting, killing, transporting or harming wild organisms is prohibited unless permitted under strict environmental regulations issued by the competent authority. The introduction of non-native species into the reserve is also banned to prevent ecological imbalance.
Damage or removal of geological formations, destruction of natural habitats and activities causing soil erosion are not allowed. Pollution of soil, water or air is strictly forbidden, alongside any recreational or sporting activity that could negatively impact wildlife.
Military manoeuvres and shooting exercises are also banned within the reserve boundaries. In addition, cutting or damaging trees and plants, or undertaking agricultural, industrial or commercial operations, requires prior approval from the relevant authority. Construction of buildings, roads, or use of vehicles within the reserve is prohibited without official permits.
Surrounding zones
The decree extends environmental control beyond the reserve itself. Any activity in surrounding areas that could affect the ecological balance of Wadi Al Qarha is also restricted unless a permit is issued by the competent authority. This provision is designed to ensure that external development or activity does not compromise the protected ecosystem.
Management framework
The competent authority has been assigned responsibility for managing the reserve and implementing its regulatory framework. It will oversee coordination with the municipal council and relevant municipality to ensure structured environmental governance. The authority will also work in coordination with Sharjah Police to enforce compliance and address violations within the reserve.
The Chairman of the competent authority is empowered to issue administrative decisions necessary for implementation. Any violation of the decree will be subject to penalties under Federal Law No. (24) of 1999, along with liability for compensation and restoration costs for environmental damage as determined by the authority.
